My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I can usually rate a book according to how late I stay up to finish it. This one had me up until 1 a.m. and I would have stayed up longer if I would have needed to. I thought this book was amazing!
Dorrie has had a tough life. Never feeling comfortable in one place. She is always on the move. Her mother, Noreen, is distant, and she has only seen her father 2 times. At the young age of 15 Dorrie finds herself pregnant and Noreen making the decision for her to give the baby up for adoption. Noreen knows of a family that would give the baby a good home.
Chief of police, Joseph, is a true officer of the law. He is always suspicious and looks for the evil in everyone. When he was young he left his small hometown in Abingdon, Virginia to become a marine, only to come home and find his brother had committed the ultimate betrayal and had gotten Joseph's girlfriend pregnant. This betrayal shoves a permanent wedge between the brothers until one horrible day when David is in a terrible car accident.
Many secrets are kept throughout this book, but Dorrie and Joseph's lives quickly become entwined. All of the families have a strong faith and often times look to God for guidance through rough situations. This is "a story of law and grace, of forgiveness and redemption, of finding joy and rest in a broken world."
